Many people claim to be Christians, but how many of them actually follow the word of Christ according to the doctrine of Christianity, the Bible? When churches preach the message of Christ to their attendees they only share a very selective version that appeals to them. A "convenient Christianity", if you will. What about the parts they ignore? If one is only following the words selected by the church, are they not then simply following the word of the Church and not necessarily Christ? Below are several teachings and instructions of Jesus from the Bible that self-proclaimed Christians overlook or are unaware of.
a
When you pray pray in private and secrecy.
Christians love to pray together. Prayer becomes more believable to the individual if one sees others doing it too. Jesus however tells us that when we are to pray we are to do it in secret and behind closed doors. Some Christians, so badly wanting to pray in public, will actually say that what Jesus "really meant" in Matthew is that we should not pray obnoxiously in public like the hypocrites. True, that is what Jesus was saying in
Matthew 6:5 just before going on to specifically say in
6:6 that when you pray do so in your room, with the doors closed, in secrecy.
Matthew 6:6 "But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."

Sell everything you own and give to the poor
Jesus tells us that we are to sell everything we own and to give the money to the poor. Jesus felt this was so important that he said it two times in the book of Luke and again in the books of Matthew and Mark. Christians who do not have faith in Jesus' word and find more comfort in their materialist possessions discard Jesus' teachings by saying that he was only talking to one person. In three of the cases he was talking to one specific person but was not making a requirement for just him. Also, in Luke 12:33, he was talking to all of his disciples, not just a single person.
Mark 10:21 "Jesus looked at him and loved him. 'One thing you lack,' he said. 'Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.'"
Matthew 19:21 "Jesus answered, 'If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.'"
Luke 18:22 "When Jesus heard this, he said to him, 'You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.'"
Luke 12:33 "Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will not be exhausted, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys."
Luke 14:33 "In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple."

Do not get divorced or marry a divorced woman
Jesus says that once you are married you are not allowed to get divorced, and he also says that divorces cause the wife to automatically become an adulteress. A divorce is typically an opportunity for a couple to admit they were wrong. You can't know for sure that a marriage will be a successful and happy one but Jesus says you have to stay together no matter what. Jesus even claims that you are committing the sin of adultery if you divorce your wife or if you simply marry a woman who has been divorced.
Matthew 5:32 "But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, causes her to become an adulteress, and anyone who marries the divorced woman commits adultery."
Luke 16:18 "Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and the man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery."
Mark 10:7-9 "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate."

Follow The Old Laws
In the New Testament, Paul says we can ditch all of the Old Laws. However, when Jesus says anything about the Old laws, he claims that we must follow them to get into Heaven. Jesus states twice that as along as Heaven and Earth still exists we must follow even the least of of the Old Laws. He tells us that anyone who does not practice the old laws more righteously than the Pharisees and the teachers of the law "...will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven." In the book of James, we are told by Jesus that a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone; our actions are what makes our faith complete.
Matthew 5:17-20 "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven."
Luke 16:17 "It is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for the least stroke of a pen to drop out of the Law."
James 2:21-22 "Was not our ancestor Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did."
James 2:24 "You see that a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone."
James 2:26 "As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead."

Apologists try to cover up these inconvenient teachings from Jesus in two different ways.
1. They cite Romans 10:4, Galatians 3:23-25, or Ephesians 2:15 as an example of the New Testament allowing us to not bother with the troublesome Old Laws. However, as just mentioned, these verses are all the words of Paul and are opposite of what Jesus says. Christians are suppose to follow Jesus, not Paul.
2. They cite Matthew 22:37-39 which says loving the Lord and loving your neighbor as yourself are the two greatest commandments. They then conclude that these are the only commandments one must follow. The first problem with this is that Jesus simply says these are the greatest, not the only, commandments. By no means is he discarding all other commandments here. The second problem is that although these may be the greatest Jesus claims in the Bible that we still need to follow even the least of the commandments.
