4:2 God Doesn't Exist
Ask any Christian if a god exists and they will say yes but commonly they cannot provide any reasons to base their answer on. Some even use excuses to avoid providing reasons such as saying "you can't prove he doesn't exist" or "god is unprovable." The inability to prove the non-existence of something is not evidence for its existence and if you think a claim is unprovable it is dishonest to make the claim. Some Christians can provide reasons why they claim that a god exists but such reasons have always been based on falsehoods or misunderstandings about nature and science as addressed below.

Defining God
A god is defined as a conscious supernatural being/deity that created the natural world, intervenes with the natural world, and is not subject to the laws of nature.
Pegasus
When a person claims that Bigfoot or Pegasus exists we don't take them seriously until they can provide evidence. Why make a special exception for claims about gods?

Not saying yes is not the same as saying no. When asked if a god exists it is okay to simply say that you don't know or don't have any reason to suggest so.

a
There Is No Intervening
In ancient times we assumed that nature was controlled in the same manner which we controlled objects. If we saw a spear thrown down from a city wall we knew there had to be a thrower. When we saw lightning thrown down from a cloud we assumed there was a being doing the throwing. We now know better. Occurrences such as lightning, rain, earthquakes, and tornados are not controlled by any sort of conscious being. The weather is also not influenced by what god we worship or which rituals we perform.

All of nature follows certain basic constants and limitations that we have a firm understanding of. In the Bible, God regularly interrupts these "natural laws" but in real life they are never interrupted. The closest we get are non-supernatural miracles, typically mere coincidences, that do not break the laws of nature.

b
Life Was Designed By Nature, Not God
Just as we assumed that lightning thrown down from a cloud had to have a conscious being doing the throwing we also assumed that the apparent design of life had to have a conscious being doing the designing. Life was designed and indeed has a designer but not a conscious one. The designer of life is nature, not God. And the designer's method for fine tuning life was a process known as Natural Selection, not conscious decision making.

In order to understand how life was designed through natural means you first must understand the basic mechanics and principles of evolution along with the observable and known evidence which the explanation, or "theory," of evolution is based upon. You can learn more in Chapter 6:3 Theory of Evolution.

c
The Universe Was Not Consciously Created
There are two major problems with the assumption that a god created our universe. Most obvious is that we know how the universe formed by natural means all the way back to a fraction of a second after the Big Bang. We also have several supported explanations to what caused the Big Bang, all of which show no need to invoke the aid of a god.

Secondly, we also now know that consciousness is 100% based and dependent on the physical structure of the brain. In short, we know that consciousness cannot exist before the material world did and thus a conscious being could not have created the material world. Yet we do know how nature, a non-conscious force, can and did create the material world. You can learn more in Chapter 6:4 Soul vs Cognitive Science.

d
The Creation Of God
By looking at the history of any particular god you can easily see that it's nothing more than mere folklore. For example the god written in the Bible is vastly different from the earliest tellings of him. Thanks to archeological discoveries we can trace God's history. As with many gods the god of Abraham was simply an adaptation of an early god. In this case refugee slaves fleeing Egypt adapted a Canaanite god as their own. Early Israelites also incorporated a Babylonian mother goddess into their religion. This goddess was the wife of the god of Abraham. The god(s) worshiped by the early Israelites was very different from the version worshiped by those who later wrote down the stories.

e
The Conclusion
Although we technically cannot say with 100% certainty that anything does not exist we can confidently say, based on empirical evidence, the existence of a god is no more likely than the existence of fairies, unicorns, or the Smurfs. There is absolutely no educated reason to think that a god does exist and the possibility of a conscious creator of the material universe is not even possible. All gods, including the god of Abraham, were all based on imagination and assumptions. They were not based on evidence but rather on the once lack of evidence.

Failed Cases for God's Existence

Start of time & space

Time is simply the measurement of movement and the increments of such measurement (e.g. minutes, hours, days) are based off of how long it takes for Earth to move around the sun. During the Big Bang is when everything in our universe was set into motion making the start of motion and thus the start of time in our universe. Space on the other hand is, in simplest terms, the area within a container. Prior to the Big Bang our entire universe was condensed into a tiny fireball but then that ball rapidly expanded creating space within it. When scientists talk about the start of time & space they are talking about the start of movement and the formation of space within only our universe, not the start of all time & space. The Big Bang that created our universe is believed to be just one of many Big Bangs that each created separate universes containing time & space.

The Cosmological Odds

Some assume that the universe's formation had to have been guided by a conscious being since the probability of it being the way it is when factoring the other possible outcomes is [insert really high number here] to one. This is a false use of the Theory Of Probability. This "argument" is based on the invalid assumption that life, the way it is, was the pre-determined targeted outcome.

Consider this; the mathematical odds of dealing a hand of thirteen specified cards from a well-shuffled deck of fifty-two playing cards are about 635,000,000,000 to one. If a person calls out thirteen specific cards ahead of time and then those specific cards are dealt one could claim that was likely too improbable to happen naturally based on the theory of probability. However, if the cards are already dealt and made known before the person calls out the thirteen specific cards there is no reason to suggest that the selection of the cards required any special guidance.

Complexity of Life

Yes, life is complex but that does not mean it had a conscious designer. A snow flake is complex and it does not require a conscious designer. Life is actually overly complex with far too many unnecessary parts assembled in such a frantic mess that causes a wide range of faulty design flaws from avoidable limitations to cancer causing agencies. The over complexity shows that life certainly was not designed by a conscious being with the ability to plan ahead or work efficiently. Besides, the complexity of life has already been well explained by science through natural means.

Earth: Designed For Life?

Some think that Earth was made perfect for life because of various reasons including its distance from the sun and the tilt of its axis. However, simply being capable of harboring life is not the same as being perfect for life. The planet Earth is far from being perfect for life and throughout life's history of existence there has been a vicious battle against nature to survive as life has gone through many mass extinctions, some even bigger than the mass extinction that devastated the end of the Cretaceous period.

Also, just because life can exist on Earth does not nessesitate that it was designed for life. Your shower is an ideal setting for fungus to grow but it obviously was not designed for the inhabitance of fungus. Life was a side effect of the conditions of Earth, not the other way around. And although Earth is the only planet in our solar system known to naturally sustain human life it is by no means the only planet in our universe that is capable of doing so. There are over one hundred billion galaxies in the known universe, each of which could potentially contain hundreds or even billions of separate solar systems. In light of this relatively modern knowledge the number of potential earth-like planets such as "Gliese 581 C" which could harbor life is, to say the least, dramatically and unbelievably high. The odds of known life forming on just one of those planets is suddenly less impressive.

Isn't DNA a language?

DNA has been nicknamed "The Language Of Life" because it is like a language. All languages and codes that us humans use have been invented by us humans so many creationists assume DNA must also have been created by a conscious being. This assumption fails because of two very simple reasons. Although DNA has many similarities to language and code it also has many differences and is not subject to the same limitations. We also know different ways of how DNA and it's predecessor RNA could have simply formed by natural means so saying DNA could not have formed without a conscious creator only proves a failure to keep up to date with the modern knowledge of DNA.

Something from nothing?

When physicists say there was "nothing" before the Big Bang of our universe they do not mean literally nothing. What they mean is that there was no matter, just energy. It was that energy which formed matter and the Big Bang. Christians will commonly ask "What came before that? Before that? And before that?" Once science cannot currently provide an answer they will insert God and assert that he created it. In this case they will assert that God created the energy which gave way to the Big Bang.

There are two main problems to that assertion. First, it is a mere assertion not based on evidence. Secondly, you would have to ask what came before God? If one says it is an unanswerable question then why not say that "where did energy come from" is an unanswerable question too? And if one is going to conclude that God always existed then why not do as Carl Sagan suggests and save a step by concluding that energy always existed?

God Talks To Me

Many credit the voice in their head as the voice of God. That voice however is just unfiltered thought. It is the same "voice" that speaks when people talk to other gods or when children talk to their imaginary friends. It is the same "voice" that can send people to the psychiatric ward, it does not matter what name you put on it. If one actually convinces themself that the voice in their head is "evidence" for God then they must also believe in most other gods and every imaginary friend ever conceived by a child.

Also, if God existed why would his communication abilities be limited to the same level as imaginary friends? In the Bible God speaks aloud, either projected from a bush, through the mouth of a donkey, or even face to face.

Prayer/Faith Healing

Some use stories of prayers to prove of God healing the sick yet faith healing has only been proven as false. There have been cases where a doctor was sure that a person could not recover then after people prayed the patient did in fact recover. However the same has happened for those who were not prayed for. The opposite has also happened to people. The doctor was sure they would recover then the patient takes a fatal turn for the worse, even when prayed for. What is really going on is that the doctors were simply wrong. Even doctors make mistakes.

People of all theistic religions are convinced that praying to their god or gods has caused people to be healed. Regardless there has never been any documentations to support such claims. There has never been imagery of structural changes to an eye as it was supposedly cured from blindness by a god. And there has never been evidence supporting any other supernatural case.

God Is Not Provable

Some claim that the existence of a god is not provable or testable. If that is the case then it is very dishonest for anyone to say that a god exists. However, even if a god supposedly resides in a mythical realm "outside of" the natural world it is the claimed interactions with the natural world that we can prove or disprove the existence of.

You Can't Disprove It

When asked for evidence of a god's existence some will reply by saying, "Well you can't prove that he doesn't exist." This is just a way to avoid giving evidence to back one's claim of a god's existence. It is true, you technically cannot disprove with 100% certainty the existence of anything. The non existence of Bigfoot, Pegasus, fairies, and the Smurfs is also not provable. That does not mean we can honestly suggest that any of them do exist.

God Is Nature Or Energy

Some claim that God is nature, energy, or something else. By calling something that is proven to exist "God" does not mean that a god exists. Saying that "Bigfoot is nature" or that "Bigfoot is energy" does not prove the existence of Bigfoot despite the proven existence of nature and energy. God is not nature, nature is nature and God is a god.
