When you have questions about history or science you turn to the experts in those subjects, historians or scientists in related fields of study. Many Christians however will instead turn to Christian apologists for answers related to history or science but when you get right down to it apologists are essentially professional liars. If history or science supported their claims then apologists would not exist. Historians and scientists are perfectly able to speak for themselves as they do with all the topics that don't contradict Christian claims.
Big name apologists make a living off of telling Christians what they want to hear, despite the evidence, through various tactics. This page aims to show you what to look for so you can avoid being taken advantage of by apologetics.
a
Unequal Honesty
Most arguments for Christianity can be disproved by simply applying it to any other topic. A certain subconscious bias is given by Christians to any response in defense of their religion. In order to avoid this bias try applying the argument to any other topic and see if it still sounds like a valid argument. For example, some believe that Christianity must be true because historically people have died for the faith. Sounds logical, people would not be willing to die for a lie. However people have also killed themselves for the UFO religion Heaven's Gate. Does that mean there really was a space craft trailing the comet Hale-Bopp? Obviously not. Just because people are willing to die for a claim does not mean that the claim is true. It just means that they think it is true.

Quote Mining
Quotes are very easy to misuse to give a false impression of what an author means. Apologists commonly take quotes out of context so it appears that the experts agree with them. To find out what scientists and historians really say listen to them instead of letting apologists speak for them. Quotes, even in context, should still never be used as a basis of truth. What experts say is not as important as why they say what they say.
The image to the left is from a mobile phone background created by Not Of This World clothing. It quotes Charles Darwin mentioning that it's absurd to think the complex human eye could have evolved naturally. This is a favorite amongst apologists to "prove" that evolution is absurd and that Darwin himself agreed. Apologists however conveniently never mention the text that immediately follows this quote from The Origins of Species.
Darwin mentions the absurdity to point out that no matter how absurd an idea may sound it may still be true. He goes on to explain how the human eye easily could have evolved through natural means and even gives examples of the various intermediate stages which can be seen in organisms living today.

What They Say, But Not What They Mean
Being honest about the words said by scientists while lying about what was actually meant by those words is a common tactic by Apologists. It's so effective because a person can actually check to see that scientists really do say what the apologists say they are saying. However, what it sounds like they mean is not always what is actually meant because certain terminology holds different meaning when used in layman terms. Again it is best to just let the experts speak for themselves instead of letting apologists speak for them.
Just a Theory
Apologists claim that evolution is "just at theory" and therefore is not actually true. In reality evolution is not a theory, it is a scientific fact. The explanation of how evolution occurred is called a theory.
In layman's terms a "theory" is just a hunch or guess. In scientific terms that is called a hypothesis. A theory in scientific terms is a well-substantiated explanation based on lines of evidence that enable valid predictions and have been tested through various means. The "theory of evolution" is the explanation of how life evolved. The "theory of gravity" is the explanation of how gravity works.
Nothing
When physicists say that "nothing" existed before the Big Bang then mean nothing material. All matter came from energy and before the Big Bang only energy existed. No one knows yet if energy came from something else or if it always existed.
Time & Space
Apologetic Claim: Scientists mention that space and time had a beginning thus there was a point before space and time existed so they had to be created by something that exists outside of space and time, like God.
Time is simply the measurement of movement and the increments of such measurement (e.g. minutes, hours, days) are based off of how long it takes for Earth to move around the sun. During the Big Bang is when everything in our universe was set into motion making the start of motion and thus the start of time in our universe. Space on the other hand is, in simplest terms, the area within a container. Prior to the Big Bang our entire universe was condensed into a tiny fireball but then that ball rapidly expanded creating space within it. When scientists talk about the start of time & space they are talking about the start of movement and the formation of space within our universe, not the start of all time & space. The Big Bang that created our universe is believed to be just one of many Big Bangs that each created separate universes containing time & space.

A Lack Of Fact Checking
All Christian apologists rely on the anticipation that you will not fact check their claims. Many Christians feel that they are honest about their faith when they are willing to question it and seek answers but they typically don't question the given answers. Thus they are only taking the first steps in being honest but never go all the way. When reading an answer given by apologists (or anyone) it is crucial to fact check their claims and research their sources. Then fact check those sources repeating the process until you reach an answer that cannot be disproved no matter how hard you try. Only then are you being as honest as possible.
Question everything, even the answers to your questions.
