Has Christianity played an important and contributing role in society? This idea of Christianity somehow being good for a society stems from misinformation spread in an attempt to make the religion more accepted and appealing to a modern audience. However, as history proves again and again, Christianity has never been directly responsible for a single good deed.
a
"Christian Charity"
Christians are known for taking part in charity groups but is their religion the motive for their actions? The Bible does contain some verse that could suggest we should be charitable but it also demands that we commit acts which most of us in today's age see as immoral. Clearly if a person is only picking select parts of Christianity to follow, such as supporting charity, then the religion could not possibly be the source of their motives. Those who are Christians who do go good do so because they are good people who want to do good. Christianity only steals the credit for their personal good deeds.
b
Not Exclusive
All of the charitable contributions to society that one commonly associates with Christianity are not exclusive to Christianity. Charitable organizations such as Toys For Tots, The Nature Conservancy, Doctors Without Borders, American Red Cross, Kiva, Mama's Kitchen, and the American Cancer Society are all secular based with no religious affiliation. These organizations help simply for the sake of helping and demonstrate that we don't need Christianity to help others. The decision and strive to do good deeds ultimately comes from the human conscience.
c
Religious vs Secular Societies
A comparison between religious and secular societies suggests that religion actually has a negative impact on society. There is a higher rate of homicide, juvenile and early adult mortality, sexually transmitted disease infections, teen pregnancy, and abortions within religious based societies. Western European countries such as Sweden and Denmark are primarily secular, yet they have far lower crime rates, better social services for the disadvantaged, and contribute more per capita to international aid than the United States which primarily consists of Christians.

Inside The U.S.A.
In USA the highest divorce rates occur in the most religious states including TN, AR, AL, and OK yet Massachusetts (home of gay marriage) has the lowest divorce rate as shown by statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau and the National Center for Health. Teen pregnancy, suicide, and alcohol related traffic fatalities are also higher in states with larger religious populations. According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons as of 1997 atheists make up 12% of the US population yet only 0.209% of its prison population. That is 156 out of 74,731 criminals who do not deriver their morals from religious beliefs while the rest do. Out of convicted rapists, 57% admitted to reading pornography and 95% admitted to reading the Bible.
