Do You Actually Follow Jesus' Word?

Many people claim to be Christians but how many of them actually follow the word of Christ according to the doctrine of Christianity, the Bible? When churches preach the message of Christ to their attendees they only share a very selective version that appeals to them. A "convenient Christianity" if you will. What about the parts they ignore, if one is only following the words selected by the church are they not then simply following the word of the Church and not necessarily Christ? Below are several teachings and instructions of Jesus from the Bible that self-proclaimed Christians overlook or are unaware of.
1.  When you pray, pray in private and secrecy.
If you have ever prayed at the dinner table, in church or any public place then you are going against the word of Christ.   Matthew 6:6 "But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."

2.  When you have dinner party do not invite friends or family. Invite the homeless & handicapped.
At your last birthday party or luncheon did you invite friends and family or the homeless and handicapped?   Luke 14:12-14 "Then Jesus said to his host, 'When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.'"

3.  Divorce = Adultery
Any woman who gets divorced becomes an adulteress.   Matthew 5:32 “But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, causes her to become an adulteress, and anyone who marries the divorced woman commits adultery.”

4.  Marrying a divorced woman = Adultery
Matthew 5:32 “But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, causes her to become an adulteress, and anyone who marries the divorced woman commits adultery.”

Luke 16:18 "Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and the man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

5.  Having any natural sexual urges = Adultery.
If you have any sexual desires before you are married you have committed adultery. So according to Jesus virtually every boy is an adulterer by the age of 13.   Matthew 5:28 “But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

6.  Do not get divorced
According to the Bible you are not allowed to get a divorce.   Mark 10:7-9 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate."

7.  Sell everything you own and give to the poor.
Jesus felt this one was so important that he said it two times in Luke and also in Mark & Matthew.   Mark 10:21 “Jesus looked at him and loved him. ‘One thing you lack,’ he said. ‘Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.’”

Matthew 19:21 “Jesus answered, ‘If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.’”

Luke 18:22 "When Jesus heard this, he said to him, 'You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.'"

Luke 12:33 "Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will not be exhausted, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys."

8.  You must give whatever a person asks for
If anyone asks you for something you must give it them.

If they take something that belongs to you do not demand it back.
Luke 6:30 "Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back."

9.  Do not plan for the future
Matthew 6:28-34 "And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."

10.  Hate your family
The book of Matthew says you must love your family but the book Luke demands that you hate your family if you want to be a disciple of Jesus.   Luke 14:26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters—yes, even his own life—he cannot be my disciple.”

11.  Follow the Old Laws
Although the New Testament is divided on whether or not the Old Laws must still be followed the word of Christ is not. None of the passages against the Old Laws are words of Christ but rather they are the words of Paul the Apostle. Everything that Jesus is quoted to say on the topic within the Bible, like Matthew 5:17-20, does demand that his followers continue to follow all of the Old Laws if they expect to get into Heaven. Every time a Christian breaks a law from the Old Testament they are going against Jesus' word to uphold the Old Law. To the right are just a few basic samples commonly ignored by Christians today.
